František Hudeček made "Witness" with paint, and with a distinct approach to seeing. It's like he’s built this figure from the ground up, piece by piece, with layers of color and geometry. I love how Hudeček uses these cool blues and grays as a backdrop. It makes the reds and whites in the figure pop right out. The paint looks pretty thin, almost like watercolor in places, which gives the whole thing a kind of ghostly feel. Look at the head – it’s like a puzzle of eyes and targets. Are they watching us, or is the figure watching itself? There's something both unsettling and deeply human about it. This piece reminds me a little of Paul Klee, in the way it mixes abstraction with these playful, symbolic elements. "Witness" really embraces ambiguity, inviting us to see the world in a multitude of ways.
