Caspar David Friedrich made this serene drawing, Moonrise on an Empty Shore, around the turn of the 19th century using sepia ink on paper. The sepia wash gives the work a monochromatic, ethereal quality. Friedrich carefully layered the ink to create a nuanced sense of depth and atmosphere, capturing the subtle gradations of light as the moon rises over the calm sea. The application of sepia would have required a practiced hand, carefully controlling the dilution of the ink and the pressure of the brush to achieve the desired tonal range. Friedrich may have chosen sepia for its tonal warmth and capacity for producing delicate, almost dreamlike effects. This allowed him to evoke a mood of quiet contemplation and romantic longing. The emphasis here is on the artist's labor and skill, using modest materials to great effect. Appreciating this artwork through the lens of its making allows us to look past conventional art historical categories, recognizing the value in both the artistry and the craft.
