This bronze medal was made by David van der Kellen in 1835 to commemorate the centenary of the Mennonite Seminary in Amsterdam. The medal itself would have been created through a process of die-striking. The design is engraved into hardened steel dies, then used to impress the image onto the metal blank. The choice of bronze as a material speaks to both its durability and its association with commemorative objects. The crisp details and raised relief achieved through die-striking enhance the medal's legibility and tactile quality. The inscription on the reverse of the medal reads "The centenary of the Mennonite Seminary", while on the other side we see allegorical images. Medals like this were often produced in multiples. Die-striking was a means of production which allowed for relatively efficient reproduction. The artistry and skilled labor involved are often overlooked, yet they are integral to understanding its value, both as a historical document and as a work of craft.
