Curatorial notes

Émile Louis Vernier created this landscape image of Weide bij Villerville with etching. Vernier made this work during a time of growing appreciation for the French countryside, especially by artists. The Barbizon school, which focused on painting en plein air, or outdoors, had a strong influence on how artists depicted rural life. Vernier's landscape does not shy away from picturing the harshness and labor connected with that life. Yet the development of new artistic institutions and a growing art market made it possible for artists to explore rural subjects and find a receptive audience in urban centers. Art historians interested in Vernier often consult catalogs of prints and engravings, exhibition reviews from the period, and biographies of artists who were part of his circle. These resources help us understand how images like this one participated in shaping cultural values and aesthetic preferences.
