Robert Frank made ‘Trip to Spain A3’ using gelatin silver prints fixed on a film base. Photography is a fascinating medium. It seems immediate, but relies on industrial manufacturing and a darkroom process, like weaving, glassblowing, or ceramics. The artist’s work involved a repetitive, labour-intensive process in the dark room to realize his art. We see here a series of frames from his trip, each capturing a different scene, a different moment. In Frank’s work, this industrial, almost banal material – the film strip – gains new status. It’s a meditation on how photography, and by extension the broader media landscape, shapes our perceptions and memories. Each photograph is a fragment, and when combined, they suggest a wider narrative, prompting us to reflect on how stories are constructed, both visually and conceptually. By emphasizing material and process, we can appreciate how Frank elevated this simple medium into a vehicle for profound social commentary, blurring the lines between fine art and everyday life.
