Jan van der Kaa made this Italian Landscape with Ox Cart, a monochromatic work, sometime in the mid-19th century. It presents an idealized view of the Italian countryside. We see the remnants of ancient architecture, symbols of a glorious past, alongside peasants going about their daily lives. Paintings and prints of Italian landscapes were popular with Northern European audiences who were eager to visit Italy as part of their "Grand Tour". These images helped shape their expectations. They reinforced the image of Italy as a land of classical ruins, picturesque landscapes, and simple, rustic folk. The image does not realistically depict the social and economic realities of 19th-century Italy, which was a time of great poverty, political unrest, and social inequality. The image serves as a reminder of how art is shaped by the desires and expectations of its audience, as well as by the social and economic conditions in which it is produced and consumed. To more fully understand it, scholars might consult travel guides, historical surveys, and other works of art from the period.
