This small silver coin is an "Allegory on the bad reign of Maximilian, Archduke of Austria" and although the exact date and artist are unknown, it serves as a potent symbol of resistance against oppressive rule. During Maximilian's reign in the late 15th century, the Netherlands experienced political turmoil and economic hardship, which bred widespread discontent. This coin is an artifact of political resistance and the collective desire for change during this period. The imagery on the coin is quite striking. On one side, we see death, carrying the coat of arms and scepter that represent Maximilian's power. The imagery suggests that the policies enacted during Maximilian’s reign were perceived as destructive, thus leading to the metaphorical death of the region's prosperity and stability. The other side depicts the lion of the Netherlands, usually an emblem of strength, shown here ensnared in chains. This small object is an evocative reminder of the impact of leadership and the voices of dissent that emerge during moments of crisis.
