Flirtation 

Melissa Hefferlin’s “Flirtation” presents us with a vivid still life featuring lemons, a photograph of a woman, and other domestic objects. The lemons, symbols of temptation and desire since antiquity, are provocatively placed on the table, echoing the alluring gaze of the woman in the photograph. Consider the “Citrus medica” in ancient Roman mosaics and frescoes, often associated with fertility and abundance, mirroring the psychological craving for gratification. This symbol of the lemon resurfaces in Dutch Golden Age paintings, yet it still retains its sense of latent desire.
