This striking feeding bowl was crafted by Villeroy in the 18th century. The fish form immediately draws the eye, its open mouth and hollowed body ready to receive sustenance. The white ceramic is painted with vibrant colors to bring the fish to life, from the red interior of its mouth to the scales rendered in blues and greens. Beyond its playful shape, the bowl is decorated with small figures, animals and vegetation that run along the side, suggesting a pastoral scene in miniature. The combination of organic form and pictorial narrative creates a tension between utility and artistry. This tension challenges the traditional hierarchies of art. Note the subtle asymmetry in the fish's design and the somewhat naive execution of the painted figures. These imperfections only add to its charm, suggesting that its value lies not only in its function or aesthetic appeal but also in its unique character.
