Hazel Hyde made "Billethead" as part of the Index of American Design. It is a study of a carved object, probably architectural, rendered in brown and cream tones. I love how the artist has taken on the challenge of translating three dimensions into two, capturing the play of light and shadow on the intricate carving. You can almost feel the weight and texture of the original object, the way the light defines its edges and curves. Imagine Hyde in front of the billethead, squinting, and trying to figure it out. I'm really struck by the way the artist has used the medium of watercolor to evoke the texture and form of the original object. It's a quiet conversation between the artist and the object they're depicting, each informing the other. It reminds me that painting isn't just about representation, it's about a meeting of minds and hands across time.
