Niels Larsen Stevns made this sketch of figures in motion with what looks like graphite on paper. These aren’t finished drawings, but rather a way of thinking through the body by making marks and seeing what happens. There's something so immediate about sketches; you can see the artist working out an idea right there on the page. Look at how lightly the graphite is applied. Some marks are so light they are barely visible, while others have more weight. There’s a real sense of energy and movement captured in these simple lines; it's like the figures are dancing across the paper. It reminds me of Philip Guston’s drawings, where you can see him wrestling with form and meaning in every stroke. It's like witnessing a thought taking shape. And that, to me, is where the magic of art lies.
