This print, "View of the Herengracht in Amsterdam, seen from the Utrechtsestraat," was made by an anonymous artist. The print is made using the intaglio process of etching, in which lines are incised into a metal plate and then printed. The choice of etching for this urban view is telling. Rather than the unique touch of a painter, here we see an efficient means of reproducing images for a growing market. Look closely, and you’ll notice the linear quality of the etching emphasizes the regimented buildings and the orderly flow of the canal, all of which speak to the commercial power of Amsterdam. Even the clouds are rendered as repetitive, almost decorative devices. Consider the labor involved: the etcher’s patient work with acid and tools, mirroring the labor that built the city itself. In this way, the print is not just a picture of Amsterdam, but also a product of its own industriousness. It’s a testament to how materials, making, and context intertwine.
