Yoko d'Holbachie made this painting, Lost Baby, in our current century using oil on wood. It evokes many questions about the role of childhood in our society and how childhood shapes our perceptions. The little creature is presented in a very childlike way, with a baby bottle, pastel clothing, and a cute expression. Its body is that of a monster, however, so the image creates a juxtaposition of innocence and horror that is common to what we think of as ‘lowbrow art.’ This form of cultural expression comes out of the skater and punk subcultures of Southern California in the late 20th century and is critical of established artistic institutions. The painting can be understood as both a reflection of its social context and a critique of the commercialization of childhood. To better understand the themes and references in Holbachie's painting, one might research the history of lowbrow art and its relation to American consumer culture.
