This colored pencil drawing of a bedspread was made by Alfonso Umana sometime in the 20th century. Imagine Umana bent over the paper, carefully building up the gray background, one tiny stroke at a time. Each looping vine and delicate rose seems placed with intention, a testament to the slow, deliberate act of creation. I wonder what Umana was thinking as they worked? Were they dreaming of cozy nights and the comfort of home? Or were they simply captivated by the challenge of translating the intricate patterns of a bedspread onto paper? The texture is soft, almost velvety, which invites you to reach out and touch it, even though it's just a drawing. There's something so intimate about this piece. I see a connection between Umana's drawing and the work of other artists who find beauty in the everyday, reminding us to appreciate the simple pleasures of life. It's all one big conversation across time, an exchange of ideas that inspires creativity.
