Lisette Model captured this photograph, "Little Man, Lower East Side, New York City," with what must have been a keen eye for texture and tone. The surfaces in this image have such a tactile quality, don't they? I'm drawn to the way the light catches on the rough tweed of his coat, creating these dynamic shifts from light to shadow, and that heavy metal bollard he leans against. Think about how Model chose her vantage point and how she used the camera to capture the emotional core of the man, and the scene itself. The details are so evocative; each one feels intentional. That look on his face, the way he's gripping the post... It reminds me a little of Diane Arbus, but Model has her own way of finding the extraordinary in the ordinary. This photograph feels like a quiet poem about city life, full of unanswered questions and fleeting moments.
