Henry Pauw van Wieldrecht created this photograph of Nevski Prospekt in Sint Petersburg using an analogue photographic process. The photograph’s material quality directly informs our understanding of the scene. The tones—sepia tinged—and the soft focus, typical of early photography, lend a sense of historical distance. The very process of photography in this era was labor-intensive, involving the careful preparation and development of glass plates or paper. Notice the stark contrast between the elegant horse-drawn carriages of the upper class and the visibly under-construction street. The tram tracks and unfinished paving stones speak to a society in transition, caught between traditional modes of transport and the burgeoning promise of industrial progress. This photograph reminds us that even seemingly straightforward depictions are deeply embedded in their material and social context, challenging our notions of art as separate from the everyday realities of labor, class, and urban development.
