Jean-Louis Forain captured this scene at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes with ink and pencil. Forain was one of the great witnesses, with a caustic wit, to the social transformation of France during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Here, the artist takes us to a site of pilgrimage that was, and remains, central to the Catholic faith. At the center we see a woman hunched over, perhaps in prayer, perhaps in pain, but certainly in need of a miracle. The artist captures the emotional intensity of the moment, the hope and desperation that drove people to seek solace in faith and community. Forain invites us to contemplate how society responds to the suffering, and, perhaps more importantly, the gendered dimensions of faith, healing, and hope. It's as if Forain asks: who are we in relation to those seeking help, and what do we offer?
