Edvard Munch made Jealousy, part of The Green Room series, with oil on canvas. Just look at the way Munch lays down the paint! It's almost like he's wrestling with his feelings right there on the canvas. The colors are intense, sickly even – that green face in the foreground! It's like the guy's been poisoned, or maybe he's just green with envy, get it? And then there's this electric contrast between the figures. The woman with her flushed face, and the other man with his head bowed, both set against a churning background of dark, brooding tones. The brushstrokes are visible everywhere, thick and expressive. It feels like Munch is digging into the raw, messy reality of human emotion. Jealousy, heartbreak, longing – all that stuff we try to keep hidden. It’s very similar to the paintings of Paula Modersohn-Becker, don’t you think? Artists make art, and it resonates across time.
