"11-68" was painted by Nassos Daphnis in 1968 and it’s like a portal into another dimension! I can imagine Daphnis, brush in hand, carefully layering these egg shapes, one inside the other, each ring a different color. You start with the black, then red, blue, white, yellow and bam, you have another red one in the center. The way these colors play off each other is what really makes it sing, it's like a visual chord. I wonder if Daphnis was thinking about how the hard edges would catch the light, how each color vibrates against the others? It’s a deceptively simple composition, but it's full of movement. This feels connected to the work of other painters playing with geometry and color, like Josef Albers, but with a bit more of a playful edge, you know? Painting is like having a conversation with other artists, across time and space. We are always riffing off each other, taking what we learn and making it our own.
