About this artwork

Mariam Aslamazian painted this canvas, An Autumn Park, in oil paint. Look at the sky – it’s not quite blue, not quite grey, but something in between. It gives a backdrop to the foliage. The way Aslamazian attacks the surface is fascinating. Notice the thickness of the paint, and how she isn't afraid to let the brushstrokes show. It’s so confident. There's a real sense of speed and urgency, like she's trying to capture a fleeting moment. See how the light hits the leaves on the right. There is something inherently human about Aslamazian's handling of paint. It reminds me a little of Bonnard's paintings, but with a bolder, more graphic edge. But unlike Bonnard, this feels very much of a place, a certain kind of light that is particular to the landscape. Ultimately, Aslamazian reminds us that painting isn't just about representation, it's about feeling, touch, and the joy of making.
