Giacinto Capelli made this drawing of a silver creamer, rendered in subtle gradations of gray. I imagine him studying it closely, really looking. I mean, he’s translating a three-dimensional object onto a two-dimensional plane; that takes time and concentration. He is really thinking about form. The shape of the handle! It's so elegant. It loops and curls. It gives the piece a certain lightness, don't you think? Look how he uses the shading to create highlights and shadows, giving the creamer a metallic sheen. I wonder if he was thinking about light when he made this? Like, how the light hits the surface and creates these subtle shifts in tone. It's like he's trying to capture not just the object itself, but also the way light interacts with it. Maybe it’s not so different from what I try to do with paint. We are all constantly having a conversation through art.
