In 1923, Simon Maris wrote "Brieven en kaarten, geschreven aan onder andere George Hendrik Breitner en Marie Jordan" - that's "Letters and cards, written to, among others, George Hendrik Breitner and Marie Jordan." It’s a small thing, really, with the mechanical traces of typewritten words pressed onto paper. I can imagine Maris at his desk, fingers hitting those keys, constructing each letter so carefully. What was he thinking, what was he feeling as each word appeared? I wonder what mood was behind this letter? There's a certain rhythm to the text, a cadence that reminds me of the way some painters layer brushstrokes, building up the surface bit by bit. You know, the way we push and pull, adjust and refine? I bet Breitner and Jordan would have felt that in their bones, too. It's like a little note in a bottle tossed out to the ocean of art.
