Frédéric Boissonnas made this photographic print, Twee jongens bij een klooster in Pheneus, at some point we don't know when. Looking at this, I wonder about the artist's state of mind while framing the shot, trying to capture a sense of place and time, and the expressions and interactions of the people within it. It's like a dance, between intention and accident, control and letting go. I feel for the artist, trying to capture the fleeting moment. In this quiet composition, it's the way the artist handled light and shadow that brings everything to life. It’s as if the artist is having a conversation with the subject. Thinking about Boissonnas' wider practice, I imagine him chatting to other artists about this work, a kind of call and response across time, inspiring each other to see the world differently. This ongoing exchange is what keeps art alive, reminding us that we're all connected through the simple act of looking.
