Editor: So, this is an untitled print by Jasper Johns, it seems from around 1967-69. It’s an etching, and I’m struck by how still and almost… archaeological it feels. What do you see in this piece? Curator: It whispers of Johns's love for everyday objects, doesn't it? A flashlight, rendered with such quiet intensity. It makes me wonder what he's illuminating, what's lurking in the dark spaces he creates. Do you think it is about the object itself? Editor: Maybe it is! I see what you mean, it makes me think about how we look at the mundane things around us. Curator: Exactly! It’s about transforming the ordinary into something extraordinary, isn’t it? Perhaps that’s the real light Johns is shining, on our own perception. Editor: I'll definitely look at flashlights differently now. Thanks!
