Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this design for a dresser with pen, brush and paint. It's a good reminder that art can be a plan, not just a finished thing. The process is all there in the marks, you can see the hand of the artist thinking through the shape. Look at the different tones of brown, the shadows giving depth to the wood. The drawing isn’t about hiding anything. It's like a conversation with the material. The paint is thin in places, almost transparent, letting the paper show through, then darker in the corners, a real sense of depth. Then there are notes scribbled beside the drawing, part of the same process. It is a really tactile piece. This reminds me of some of the architectural drawings of Frank Lloyd Wright. There’s a similar openness and willingness to show the thinking behind the design. Art is just an ongoing exchange of ideas, isn't it?
