This is Johannes Tavenraat's Verhaal over Tavenraats overleden hond Ali, or Story about Tavenraat's deceased dog Ali, an undated manuscript currently held at the Rijksmuseum. The visual experience of this manuscript stems from its raw and intimate structure: lines of script, penned in dark ink, march across the aged paper. These lines, dense and at times overlapping, create a textured surface that speaks to the act of writing. Tavenraat's handwriting, with its flourishes and inconsistencies, forms a visual rhythm that guides the eye. But what happens when the semantic system fails? When the script becomes illegible, the manuscript challenges fixed meanings. The written form transforms from a carrier of narrative to an abstract composition of lines and shapes. The personal story of a dog’s death is thus rendered universal. The manuscript’s aesthetic lies in its ability to function on multiple levels, reflecting the complex interplay between language, form, and feeling.
