Otto Mueller made "Stehende Zigeunerin Mit Kind" with tempera on canvas. I wonder if he started with that pinky-brown, and then let everything grow out of it like a stain. Look how all the colours are muted, as if they’ve been sitting out in the sun too long. Even the sunflower looks exhausted! The woman’s face is turned slightly towards us, but her eyes are somewhere else, maybe on the little one she’s carrying. It makes me think about how artists are always borrowing and riffing off each other, even across time. You can see echoes of Gauguin in the flattened forms and earthy tones. But Mueller brings his own sense of melancholy. He's like, let's see what happens if I take this idea and push it through my own particular filter. The painting feels so personal and open, inviting us to bring our own experiences and emotions. It’s like he's saying, "Here's what I've got, now what do you see?"
