Filippo De Pisis’ collage, Non C' E La Fine, layers paper and paint to create a dense still life. De Pisis, an Italian artist working in the early 20th century, was an openly gay man who often explored themes of sensuality and desire in his work. Consider the influence of De Pisis’ queer identity on his artistic expression. In a time when homosexuality was often stigmatized, De Pisis’ work offered a visual representation of his own experience. The collage incorporates fragments of the world around him, including architectural details and personal mementos, into a composition which creates a sense of intimacy. Notice how the formal elements within the collage, like the curvilinear lines and overlapping planes, create a sense of emotional depth. De Pisis himself described his art as a form of “spiritual autobiography,” a window into his inner world. The personal artifacts within the image suggest a narrative that invites viewers to engage with themes of memory, identity, and self-discovery.
