James McBey made this etching, Enkhuisen, at some point in his life using a printmaking press and acid. The etching feels so light, doesn't it? Like a memory floating on paper. Look closely at how the marks build the image. The lines are like whispered secrets, each one carefully placed to define the shapes of the buildings and boats. The texture is incredible, you can almost feel the dampness of the water and the rough brick of the houses. See how McBey uses the white of the paper to create light and shadow, giving the scene a sense of depth and atmosphere? My eye keeps going back to the figures in the boat. There's something so intimate about them, as if we've stumbled upon a private moment. This reminds me of Whistler, who similarly captured fleeting moments with such sensitivity. What do you think?
