Curatorial notes
Gerard ter Borch the Younger made this drawing of three women in Spanish clothing, and a man using graphite on paper. This work's apparent simplicity belies the complexity of its material and social context. Ter Borch has used soft graphite to capture the details of the sitters' clothes. Notice the intricate details of their dresses and hats, all captured with precise lines. This not only showcases the artist's skill, but also emphasizes the labor involved in producing such garments. In the 17th century, clothing was not mass-produced. Each element would have been painstakingly crafted by skilled artisans. The drawing acts as a window into the fashion of the time, and how individuals signaled their wealth and status through dress. By focusing on the artistry of both the drawing and the clothing, Ter Borch invites us to consider the connection between art, craft, and the social hierarchies of his time. The work is an exploration of skilled work and societal roles.
