Maurice Denis painted Paradise with oils in the early 20th century. Imagine the scene as it came together, stroke by stroke, the pinks and greens blooming into a garden party of dancing figures. You can feel the artist reaching, trying to catch the light, dotting it in amongst all this luscious foliage. It's a scene of pure joy. I wonder if he was thinking about the kind of paradise that painters like Henri Rousseau dreamed up, a world overflowing with vibrant life. Look at those little orange flowers shooting up like flames! See how they almost vibrate against the cool greens and the hazy blues of the sky. Each dab feels like a little decision, a tiny adjustment, as he works to bring this vision into being. Painting becomes a way of chasing after something, a kind of conversation with the canvas itself. It's a reminder that all painters are in dialogue, borrowing, stealing, and transforming ideas across time.
