Portret van botanicus en medicus Andrea Cesalpino
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
Carlo Faucci created this portrait of Andreas Cæs alpinus, botanist and physician. Note the fur-lined coat and hat; these details do more than indicate status or warmth. They evoke a connection with nature, fitting for a botanist deeply involved in the study of natural philosophy. Consider how clothing has been employed throughout history to communicate power, status, or even a connection to the natural world, as we see here. Often, fur has been used to denote wealth. Yet it also has primal associations, linking back to ancient hunter-gatherer societies and a deep-seated respect for the animal kingdom. We can see echoes of this even today in ceremonial robes or traditional garments that feature animal hides or patterns. The image, like a recurring dream, brings us back to our origins, a reminder of the cyclical nature of symbols. These motifs resurface, evolve, and take on new meanings, echoing through time, reminding us of the power and persistence of the past.
