Emil Filla’s "Zátiší Na Stole" presents us with a fragmented still life, ripe with symbolic tension. At first glance, the fruit-filled bowl evokes abundance, yet it is juxtaposed with the stark geometry of a guitar. The guitar’s form, dissected and reassembled, hints at both harmony and discord. Consider the symbolism of the guitar, often a muse for artists. We find it echoed in ancient Greek lyres, instruments of Apollo, god of music and healing. But here, the fractured form tells a different story. The unnerving angles and color palette resonate with the psychological anxieties of the early 20th century, echoing the disquiet found in Edvard Munch's "The Scream." These fragmented forms speak to a collective memory of disruption, of a world teetering on the edge. Like a recurring dream, the image of the broken instrument resurfaces throughout art history, each time carrying the weight of cultural trauma. It serves as a reminder that even in stillness, the potential for chaos lies dormant, waiting to be awakened.
