Editor: So, here we have "Narodziny dźwięku" – "Birth of Sound" – a 2019 charcoal drawing by Lech Jankowski. It has this unsettling, almost dreamlike quality with a figure observing what seems like a giant on a...table? What do you make of this intriguing piece? Curator: Intriguing indeed. To me, it feels like a visual poem, where the stark charcoal lines create a sense of tension. Look at the juxtaposition of the small, seated figure – almost burdened – against the oversized form above. It whispers of power dynamics, of unseen forces looming. Does it remind you a bit of Kafka, that slightly unsettling, absurdist tone? Editor: I see what you mean. It does have that eerie vibe. And the table – it's like a stage, or maybe even an operating table. The figure looks… detached? What is that instrument on the table – could it represent something specific, in the work, and title? Curator: That’s precisely the intriguing question. The title, “Birth of Sound,” alongside that unusual saw-like instrument suggests creation, a beginning perhaps, but maybe one fraught with difficulty. Perhaps the seated figure is an observer to that difficult birth, a midwife of sorts, but hesitant and unsure? Editor: So it is about birth and origins... But whose origins are we talking about here? Or is the "sound" something metaphorical? Curator: Precisely, it invites that open interpretation. It doesn’t spell everything out, does it? And, in the best art, that's precisely what keeps us engaged, mulling over its layers long after we’ve left the room. Editor: I hadn’t considered it that way! Seeing it as a kind of birth narrative adds a whole other dimension. Curator: Absolutely. Art’s all about expanding the echo chamber of our minds, isn't it? Finding new resonances and questioning old assumptions.
