Pieter van der Heyden’s “The Peasant Wedding Dance,” captures a moment of communal celebration in the 16th century. Amidst the revelry, it’s impossible to ignore the ways in which the figures are rendered. The artwork provides a glimpse into the lives of peasants, in a society rigidly stratified by class. The dance, a central element of the wedding, is rendered with a vitality that acknowledges their pleasures, but it's also hard not to notice the caricature-like representation of the figures; a depiction of unrefined celebration, underscoring class differences. Does this image simply record a scene, or does it perpetuate stereotypes? The artist offers a view that blends observation with social commentary, capturing a moment in time and also shaping perceptions of an entire group of people.
