Curatorial notes
This portrait of Emperor Marcus Aurelius by Joos Gietleughen presents a man crowned with laurels, encircled by an inscription. The laurel wreath, a symbol of victory and status since ancient Greece, adorns his head, signifying triumph and imperial authority. Yet, observe how this symbol has transformed over time. Initially linked to Apollo and intellectual prowess, it evolved into a marker of military and political victory. In the Renaissance, we see artists and rulers alike appropriating classical motifs to legitimize their power, subtly aligning themselves with the grandeur of the past. Even today, we see echoes of this imagery in emblems and awards, a testament to the enduring psychological power of classical symbols. The image engages us on a deep, subconscious level, tapping into our collective memory of power, virtue, and the cyclical nature of history itself.
