Curatorial notes

Johann Andreas Benjamin Nothnagel etched this tiny scene of a man and woman, capturing a seemingly simple moment. But look closer, and you'll see a dance of symbols echoing through time. Here, the woman extends a plate, an offering. We find echoes of this gesture across centuries, from ancient Roman offering rituals to Renaissance depictions of Salome presenting John the Baptist's head on a platter. It speaks to the act of giving, of sacrifice, but also, perhaps, of temptation. The man, seated upon what appears to be a barrel, holds a glass; they share a drink. Sharing food and drink, in mythology and ritual, can symbolize conviviality, but also pacts. Consider how gestures like these resurface, evolve, and take on new meanings depending on the era, reflecting our ever-changing cultural landscape.
