Lisa Yuskavage made this painting, called ‘Home’, with oils on canvas. What strikes me is how the creamy, hazy light seems to pour over everything, softening edges and blurring the distinction between what’s real and what’s imagined. The painting feels intimate and a little unreal, like a half-remembered dream. You can see this in the way she blends colours into each other, creating soft, almost hazy transitions. Like the way she handles the light reflecting off the floor. It looks like the kind of brushwork that comes from layering and glazing, where each layer adds to the depth and richness of the surface. Think about someone like Pierre Bonnard, who was obsessed with capturing those fleeting moments of everyday life, those soft, blurry edges of perception. Yuskavage seems to be reaching for something similar, a way of painting that embraces ambiguity and allows for multiple readings. Art, after all, is an ongoing conversation, a constant exchange of ideas and ways of seeing.
