This print, titled "Koning Arsames," was made by an anonymous artist through the process of engraving. The linear quality of the engraving really lends itself to the depiction of armour, and to the rendering of this military figure. Notice the controlled way in which the artist has worked the metal plate, building up areas of shadow to create depth. The texture achieved simulates the reflective qualities of polished metal. The method requires great skill and precision. Consider how this attention to detail elevates the social status of the subject depicted. In the same way, we can appreciate how the artist uses these methods not only to depict the material, but also to tell the story of labor, of politics, and even of consumption, through the amount of work that goes into the production process. Prints such as this one challenge distinctions between fine art and craft, reminding us that meaning is embedded not only in what is represented, but in how it is made.
