Curator: Bob Law's large canvas, "Nothing to be Afraid Of IV 15.08.1969," is a minimalist statement created with simple materials. Editor: It's surprisingly calming, isn't it? Like staring into a blank sky, a sort of meditation. I get lost in the subtle shifts of tone. Curator: The application of materials in this work brings the outside in; the scale makes it feel like you could step right into it. Editor: I wonder what Law was feeling when he brushed that border around the canvas. What were the material conditions of that particular day? Curator: Thinking about the artist’s hand in the process, the thin, almost hesitant line speaks volumes about the nature of mark making. Editor: It’s amazing how such a simple gesture can hold so much feeling, so much implied meaning. Curator: It's a challenge to our expectations, isn't it? What is art, and who is it for? Editor: True, and it makes me look inward, ask myself similar questions. It's a reminder to appreciate the subtle.

This is one of a group of fourteen paintings made between 1969 and 1972; seven are titled Mister Paranoia and seven as Nothing to be Afraid of. Each consists of a black line – forming an irregular rhomboid, drawn close to the edge of the canvas. Within the delineated field at the bottom right is the work’s date. With works such as this Bob Law is not concerned with the process of painting as material, or with the idea of a minimalist capture of space through that material. The spare emptiness projects an experience of a serenity of presence. Gallery label, July 2010
