This small sheet with an overall spotted design was created by an anonymous artist and resides in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Looking at the image, it's hard to miss the abstract and repetitive pattern. Given the anonymous nature of its creation, it is difficult to pinpoint a specific culture, social structure or historical event that influenced the artwork. We can only make speculative assessments on the social conditions which might have shaped the artistic production. The design could be connected to the world of textile production or perhaps even be a preparatory study for a larger work. As historians, we can dig into archives, museum collections, and historical documents to find similar patterns and designs to understand better the meaning and purpose of such artworks. Ultimately, we can only speculate to the meaning of such art, as it remains contingent on its social and institutional context.
