Editor: This is Jan Harmensz. Muller's "Apotheosis of the Fine Arts". It's an engraving, so the lines are so precise and intentional. There is a clear distinction between the divine and the earthly realms, so, I'm curious, what do you see in this piece? Curator: As a materialist, I'm drawn to the engraving process itself. Note the labor involved in the repetitive act of carving lines into the metal, the specialized tools, and the societal structures that supported the production of such prints and their consumption. How does the print medium democratize or restrict access to art? Editor: That's a very different lens than I was looking through! Thank you! Curator: Of course! Considering the material conditions gives us a fuller picture.
