Landschap met landweg 1815

Johannes van Cuylenburgh created this etching, titled *Landschap met landweg*, in the Netherlands during the early 19th century. In it we see a dirt road cutting through a pastoral scene of trees, a cottage, and a man walking with his dog. But this isn't just a depiction of the Dutch countryside. It’s a cultural artifact shaped by the social and economic conditions of its time. As an etching it could be reproduced and distributed widely, finding its way into albums and print collections. The development of printmaking was closely linked to that of the publishing industry, a relatively new cultural institution at the time.
