This is "Bloemen in groot formaat - deel twee" by Tanigami Konan. I don't have a date for you, but it's an artist's book now in the collection of the Rijksmuseum. It's a small, unassuming volume, and, like the best art, it rewards close looking. The cover is a beautiful, muted green, like an old wall, and the eye is drawn to the darker specks of age. It’s a simple surface with the texture of wear, but this very quality makes it appealing. The marks on the central label are very controlled and considered, in stark contrast to the imperfections of the cover. I'm reminded of some of Agnes Martin's grids – simple gestures repeated to create a space for contemplation. It's a conversation between the artist and the materials, between intention and accident. What I love about art is this ongoing dialogue, this exchange of ideas across time and cultures. It's about embracing ambiguity and resisting the urge to pin things down. Art, at its best, is a question mark, an invitation to keep looking and thinking.
