This ‘Wallpaper from Bandbox’ was made by Charlotte Angus, sometime during her lifetime, 1911-1989. It's got that folk art feel. You can almost see her painting it, right? Trying out these colors, seeing what works. Did she start with the brown outlines or the light-colored coach and horses? I wonder what she was thinking about while she worked. Maybe it was about simpler times. I like the way the figures are repeated with slight differences. This gives it a sense of movement, like a primitive animation. It’s interesting how the repetition of the images makes you look closer. Even the trees have a kind of pattern. It puts me in mind of other self-taught artists like Bill Traylor, who used simple forms to tell stories, but here, it's like Angus is designing a world for herself. I feel like all artists are in a kind of dialogue with each other. They're constantly picking up on ideas and transforming them into something new. That's the beauty of painting – it’s never really finished, is it?
