Hryhorii Havrylenko made this line drawing, "Nude lying down. Based on classical works," with what looks like pen and ink. It's all about the line here, isn't it? You can sense the artist trying to figure out how the body lays in space. The texture is smooth, of course, it's paper. But the line has a kind of scratchy quality, as if the pen was running out of ink in places. Look at the lines on the figure's left leg, they aren't as bold as those that define the arm and head. The quick, repeated strokes build the form. There's something intimate about seeing the artist’s process so clearly. The overall effect, to me, feels like a conversation with the past, filtered through a modern sensibility. It reminds me a little of Matisse, with its deceptively simple lines. Like an echo or a memory of a classic nude. Art's just one big, beautiful conversation, right?
