Pierre-Paul Prud'hon made this study of a female nude with black and white chalk on blue paper. The soft modeling and classical references in the artwork reflect the values of the French Neoclassical movement. Prud'hon was working in France during a period of significant social and political upheaval, including the French Revolution, the Napoleonic era, and the Bourbon Restoration. During that time, the Academy played a central role in shaping artistic taste and enforcing moral standards. Prud'hon's work reflects the contradictions of his time. On the one hand, his sensual style and interest in personal expression aligned him with the more progressive currents of Romanticism.
