This vase, made of earthenware, was created by N.V. Haagsche Plateelfabriek Rozenburg. Notice how the vessel’s cylindrical form is articulated into three distinct sections. Two flared conical shapes sandwich a sphere, creating a rhythmic visual cadence. The surface is decorated with stylized plant motifs, painted with a palette dominated by blues, greens, and earthy browns. These colors aren't merely decorative, but act as signs, alluding to a natural world filtered through an aesthetic lens. The motifs, rather than realistically depicting botanical elements, transform them into semi-abstract patterns. The vase is a clear example of how formalism can be interlaced with semiotics. It destabilizes the notion of a vase as a purely functional object and offers a piece for aesthetic contemplation, where each element contributes to a larger dialogue about art, nature, and representation.
