Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky made this painting, After the Storm, using oil on canvas. The work seems, at first glance, like a straightforward depiction of the sea. But look more closely, and you can see a narrative of rescue playing out. To the left, we see a ship sailing smoothly, whilst to the right, survivors cling to wreckage. Born in the Crimea, Aivazovsky was the son of a poor Armenian merchant, and he received state support to study at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. His training in the Academy would have imbued him with the values of the Imperial court; this painting reflects those values through its demonstration of the triumph of civilization over the chaos of nature. But it might also invite us to reflect on the human cost of maritime life. To understand this painting fully, we might turn to archival sources that document the artist's biography and the specific social and political context in which he worked. Art is always shaped by its social and institutional conditions.
