Johannes Tavenraat made this sketch of a hare and dog sometime before his death in 1881, using pen and ink on blue paper. What’s interesting here is the immediacy of the drawing. The artist seems to have grabbed whatever was at hand – in this case, a piece of coloured paper, perhaps even an envelope – and then quickly captured the essence of his subjects. The sketchiness of the lines, the economical way he’s described the forms: all this suggests an artist deeply familiar with his materials, able to translate observation into a kind of shorthand. Consider how the blue paper itself contributes to the overall effect, providing a ready-made atmosphere, a sense of cool light. It’s a reminder that even the simplest of materials, when combined with skill and vision, can yield compelling results. This piece isn’t just a study of animals; it’s a study in economy, of seeing how much can be achieved with how little.
